Château de Pourcieux

Based in an 18th century château in the middle of the village of Pourcieux owned by the d’Espagnet family, who have lived here since 1760, this is a perfect setting for a romantic French film. The current Marquis, Michel d’Espagnet has strong opinions on visitors who call for a free aperitif and to use the facilities – but he is a charming raconteur for keen wine lovers.  His own wine is made with a certain defiance of market trends and great enthusiasm for his beloved Provence. With vineyards at 300m his wines show typical Sainte Victoire freshness of fruit and good acidity. His crisp, fresh fruity rosés are particularly successful in the USA, and his red wines are of star quality. Made from Syrah and aged in barrique they are full of black fruit, liquorice, minerality and savoury character. In 2009, the 1997 was still showing well with mature Syrah notes.

Useful information: Open for tastings morning and afternoon Monday to Friday, but calling in advance might be helpful. Limited facilities.
