Close to Domaine St-Jean, Château Thuerry contrasts with it well both in the buildings and the wines. It was modernised in the late 1990s with some radical modern architecture and its large modern cellar set in the hillside amongst the vines has been written up in a number of architectural magazines. The very sleek tasting room and shop in the old house is often decorated with the many art exhibitions put on at the estate. There are three ranges of wine covering three appellations: Le Château, Côtes de Provence; L'Exception, Vin de Pays du Var and Les Abeillons, Coteaux Varois. Interestingly, the Côtes de Provence, with its stringent rules, produces the most 'basic' of the wines, though extremely quaffable with crisp fresh fruit (no oak). The Vin de Pays wines tend to be more heavily oaked, and to my mind the new oak flavours overwhelm the fruit of the white and rosé wines. I prefer the wines from the Coteaux Varois - the red Abeillons is full of rich ripe fruit - largely Syrah and Grenache. Also of interest is le Legende d'Autumn a moelleux style wine made from Semillon.
