The history of this estate reflects that of much of the region. Until 1991 the grapes were all sold to a local cooperative. Then it was bought by a Bordelais who sold the grapes to a negociant before being bought in 1998 by Mr Todjman, an ex-Olympic sailor (hence the names of the wines – Sextant d’Or and Sextant d’Argent). Mr Tordjman sadly died in 2002 but not before he had turned the domaine around and was producing a range of attractive, easy drinking wines with plenty of fresh ripe fruit, and some bigger wines designed for accompanying meals – try his special Bruno cuvée when eating at Bruno’s (see ‘Places to Eat’). Monsieur Malinge followed his dream of owning his own vineyard in Provence, and in 2003 he gave up his job in the north of France and moved, with his family, to l’Estello. He has kept on the winemaker and is continuing with the same range of wines and has concentrated on investing in the nuts and bolts of his winery. The majority of his sales from the cellar door. The welcome by M. or Mme. Malinge is warm and they are happy to talk about their wines and their new life.
