This traditional family domaine is the other face of Côte Rôtie and for long one of the most popular Côte Rôties in England, known for making delicious elegant wines for relatively early drinking (at their peak after five or six years). The domaine is now run by Patrick and Arlette Jasmin following the death of Patrick’s popular father Robert in 1999. By coincidence I was in Ampuis on the day of Robert’s funeral, and every shop and business was closed with the village full of people flocking to the church. Patrick has risen to the challenge and continues to make one of the best traditional Côte Rôtie wines. This is a welcoming cellar to visit and Arlette is friendly and knowledgeable about the wines. One advantage of visiting is that they produce a bargain delicious, early-drinking Vin de Pays ‘La Chevalière’ from vines too young for Côte Rôtie and from grapes grown outside the appellation. This is not exported and only available at the domaine.
