For a long time, Georges Vernay was the main ambassador for Condrieu and the domaine produces some of the best and most classic wines. Georges has now retired and the domaine has gone from strength to strength under his daughter Christine Vernay and her husband Paul Amsellem. All three Condrieus come from vineyards within the village of Condrieu. The top wine Côteau de Vernon unusually needs a few years in bottle to reach its best. There is also a good Viognier Vin de Pays and a range of red wines. These are headed by two excellent Côte Rôties (the Maison Rouge is exceptional) backed up by a Saint Joseph and Côtes du Rhône. The domaine and tasting cellar are on the main road on the north side of Condrieu. They are well geared up to visitors, however if you want to meet Paul or Christine (who speak excellent English) or taste the top wines it would be safer to telephone in advance.
Useful information: Open Monday – Friday 09.00-12.00 and 14.00-18.00 and appointment is preferred. Groups are welcome and English is spoken.
