Dumazet is one of the longest established and most traditional small domaines. Pierre Dumazet is one of the nicest winemakers you could meet and a real traditionalist who loves to show his wines to interested visitors. He has two Condrieus – the forward Rouelle-Midi and the excellent Côte-Fournet, a really good example. There is also a late harvest Condrieu from Côte-Fournet called Cuvée de la Myriade – this is picked as late as November and is richer if not fully sweet. This is the traditional form of Condrieu from the 1950s and I love it, but it may be an acquired taste. He also produces small quantities of an excellent Côte Rôtie from the Côte Brune and equally good Cornas. The domaine does not advertise itself and most wine is sold to long term clients. To find it is a challenge. Enter Limony from the north and park in the first small lay-by on the right. You are then outside his door which only has a small name plate, handwritten beside the bell. You enter via the garage. He has a tasting room, but to buy the wines you go to his store behind the kitchen where the wines share space with the family freezer and stand of casseroles. Like many small Condrieu producers, the wine runs out long before the next vintage is ready.

Useful information: Appointments essential. No groups. English spoken but only if Pierre Dumazet’s son is there. .
