A disaster hit Saint-Donnat-sur-l’Herbasse in September 2008 when flash floods destroyed much of the town - Chartron had to close for a full refurbishment lasting until summer 2009. The hotel of this family-run restaurant (see 'Places to eat') has now been rebuilt and is fully updated, comfortable with a new lift and well decorated rooms with air conditioning. The pretty little town in the hills, some 15km from Tain, is famed for the organ in the cathedral and its organ festival. Another good stop if you want to eat well without leaving the hotel, but simpler than Michel Chabran. Garage available at extra charge. This would be my choice for two or three nights of friendly and pleasant accommodation with really good food.
Useful information: Rooms €95-€160; breakfast €12. Closed 1st week in January, 1st week in May, 4th week in August, last two weeks of September.
