Being the gateway to the ski resorts of the French Alps, there is a huge number of modestly-priced chain and other hotels around the three main towns in this micro-region. As these can be found easily in guide books and have nothing particularly special about them, I have chosen to focus on the more unusual places to stay and those closest to the wine areas. Note too, at the other end of the scale, the very smart and expensive 1930s Ombremont hotel (www.hotel-ombremont.com) overlooking Lac de Bourget and its 2 star Michelin restaurant Le Bateau Ivre, with an excellent reputation.
