Just east of Chambéry in its own park above the small spa town of Challes Les Eaux (with a casino and a spa still in use today), is this quite imposing château with a history that dates back to the 14th century. Renovated from 2002 and turned into a good three star hotel, it is part of the Châteaux & Hotels de France marketing group, and is full of old baronial furniture and trimmings. The best rooms and suites are in the château itself with further ones in two separate buildings – all are nicely equipped. Within the grounds is an area to play boules and an outdoor swimming pool. You can eat well at the traditional, rather grandly decorated old French style restaurant which has a reasonable selection of Savoie wines on the wine list. There is a large fireplace, sometimes lit in winter, and in summer, in good weather, it is possible to dine outside. Large private car park.

Useful information: Rooms: €84-€148; suites €194-€245; breakfast €12. Menus: €26 (weekdays)-€56. Half board available. Closed for two weeks around 1 November.
