Just over the department boundary from Savoie into Isère, off the road that leads to the Col du Mont Granier, David and Frédéric Giachino's domaine provides a welcome breath of fresh Alpine air in the somewhat difficult Savoie crus of Apremont and Abymes. Fred had been running the domaine for some years when his brother, who had been working elsewhere in the wine business, joined him in 2006. They turned to organic production and haven't looked back. Two-thirds of the small 9ha estate is planted with Jacquère, and they make a lovely low-alcohol (unchaptalized) version called Primitif, along with the very dry cuvée Monfarino and an extremely well-made Apremont. A little Roussette de Savoie is made too, and there are some interesting reds. You will taste in their cellar and may also be able to try wines from a friend, Jacques Maillet, a small, organic grower from Chautagne (to the north of Lac de Bourget), whose very interesting wines are made in the same cellar.
