The Verrazzano castle is located on a hilltop and was one of the founder members of the Chianti Classico League, established in 1924. Its high position over the Greve valley was once of strategic military importance; today you can gaze over the 42ha of vineyards, which fan out across the slopes to the edges of the wood further down the valley. The castle was an Etruscan then a Roman settlement before becoming the property of the Verrazzano family in the 7th century (Giovanni da Verrazzano, who discovered the bay of New York, was born here in 1485). The current owner is Cavaliere Luigi Cappellini; they make classic Chianti Classico and look out too for their Super Tuscan Bottiglia Particolare. Verazzano offers accommodation as well as having an excellent in house restaurant.
