Fontodi’s history can be traced back to Roman times. Its present owners, the Manetti family, who are local to the Chianti region, purchased the estate in 1968 and they have worked with winemaker Franco Bernabei since 1979. Today Fontodi’s vineyards comprise 70ha, all of which are situated in Chianti Classico’s prime terroir, the valley of the Conca d'Oro (the Golden Basin, so calledbecause of the southern exposure of the vineyards, resulting in high levels of ripeness). This lies to the south of the town of Panzano at an average altitude of 400m above sea level. The vineyards, which are cultivated using organic methods, are positioned in a natural amphitheatre that provides optimum climatic conditions for perfect ripening, and they produce wines of great character, structure and longevity. Among one of Tuscany’s top labels, look out for one of my favourite’s - Flacianello - great elegance and complexity, made from 100% Sangiovese, also a very good Chianti Classico Vigna del Sorbo with a dash of Cabernet in it to round it off.
