A visit to Elisabetta Fagiuoli’s Sono Montenidoli is a must, firstly because of Elisabetta and Sergio who run and own the estate are both great characters - and secondly because Montenidoli produces San Gimignano’s quintessential Vernaccia. Elisabetta’s winemaking philosophy is to intervene as little as possible with the process of winemaking. She wants her wines to “speak of the land”, the Vernaccia in particular has great minerality and depth and Elisabetta is proud of her old vines. My favourite Vernaccia is their refined and elegant Vernaccia Fiore which is matured on the lees, also their entry level Vernaccia is very good too with a fine fruity character. In the reds try the Chianti Colli Senesi and also Sono Montenidoli, made from their best Sangiovese it has great earthy character, depth and complexity. They also offer agriturismo accommodation (details on the website).

Useful information: Visit and tasting by appointment only from Monday to Saturday 17.00-19.00. Cost for 3 wines €20 and 6 wines €30. English, French and German spoken.
