Only very recently the Falvo brothers’ Avignonesi estate was sold to Virginie Saverys, one of the directors of the maritime company Compagnie Maritime Belge NV, based in Anvers. This prestigious estate, situated in the area of Valiano with 115ha of vines, has always been one of the jewels of Montepulciano. Its production derives from four small farms focusing on Vino Nobile. Avignonesi’s praised premium wine, Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice is made from Prugnolo Gentile, which spends its autumn and winter in their vinsantaia (attic area where Vin Santo is matured) until it shrivels losing about 70% of its original juice. It is aged in small casks for about ten years, giving a luscious, richly textured Vin Santo, with layers of depth, complexity and length. Expensive, but worth every drop!

Useful information: Open for visits and tastings by appointment only Monday to Friday, 10.00-18.00. Weekends 10.30 – 18.00. Tours from Monday to Friday at 10.00 and 15.00. The cost of a tasting is €15 with four wines. Lunch and tour at 12.00 cost €50/€70/€90. Weekend tour at 11.00 and 15.30. Languages spoken: English, German, French. Cooking courses minimum 4 people cost €180/day.
