Fattoria dei Barbi, founded in 1332, is one of Montalcino’s historic Brunello estates, which opens its doors to over 70,000 visitors each year. This family-run estate, with its 67ha of vines, has been with the Cinelli Colombini family since 1790. Their historic cellars are well worth visiting, as well as the museum based on Montalcino’s arts, crafts and rural/wine history (see ‘Wine-related Attractions’). Barbi’s wines focus on a traditional style of Brunello, which pairs very well with its in-house production of aged pecorino cheese and wild boar salami. These can be sampled at their Tavern (best to book a table in summer – Tel: 0577 847117), which is located next to the winery and serves local Montalcino and Tuscan cuisine. Al fresco dining is possible.
