The curving burgundy, gold and silver titanium roof of this Frank Gehry-designed hotel, opened with a fanfare by King Juan Carlos in September 2006, dominates the skyline in the quiet village of Elciego. Riscal’s management says that Gehry was initially reluctant to design a winery hotel, but after tasting a Marqués de Riscal from his birth year became enthusiastic about the project. The hotel’s 43 luxury rooms and suites, each different, are arranged in two wings connected by a footbridge. The furniture, much of it designed by Gehry himself as well as other architects, along with the most advanced entertainment and communications technology combine to provide a unique experience for guests. The hotel is the home of two restaurants supervised by Chef Francis Paniego of El Portal de Echaurren (Rioja’s only Michelin-starred restaurant): Bistro1860 and the Marqués de Riscal Restaurant (see ‘Places to Eat’) as well as a wine bar and cigar lounge.

Useful information: Double rooms from €325. Suites from €450.  Breakfast is included.
