When owner Angel Pérez is not mountain climbing in the Pyrenees, the Alps, the Andes or the Himalayas, he is front-of-house at La Vieja Bodega, formerly a winery in Casalarreina, 5km west of Haro. Modern Riojan cuisine is the house speciality, with a wide range of seasonal vegetable dishes, grilled steak, and baby lamb cooked in a wood-fired oven. The restaurant provides transportation to nearby towns for those guests who have overindulged.

Useful information: Starters €9-€14; main courses €14.60-€18.80. Closed Sunday evening, all day Monday and Tuesday evening. Closed for ten days in November and three weeks in January.
