Juan Jesús Valdelana belongs to a young generation of winemaking families given a grant by the government of Alava in the 1980s to learn about the international wine trade, with a view to modernising his family’s vineyards and winery. Bodegas Valdelana, next door to Marqués de Riscal on the road to Laguardia, can trace its origins to the 15th century and has left one of the underground caves more or less the way it was over 500 years ago. Another cave from the 16th century has been restored and houses the winery’s small tasting room. A little museum with pictures of vineyards and wineries is located on the top story of the winery, below which are the actual tools used at that time.
