Federico Paternina, one of Rioja’s historic wineries, was founded in 1896 in this cellar in Ollauri, near Haro. It was recently renamed ‘Conde de los Andes’ after Paternina’s prestigious Gran Reserva. Originally excavated in the 16th century, the cellar is 40m underground. Here in four caves, each 150m long, the winery ages its Reservas and Gran Reservas. The winery keeps a small stock of bottles from most of the vintages since its founding that are occasionally tasted with wine writers. The winery also offers visits and dinner at the restaurant El Conde, located in the winery, on Friday and Saturday.
Useful information: Visits by appointment only from Tuesday to Friday at 13.00; Saturday and Sunday at 11.00 and 13.00. English spoken. Cost: €8 including a glass of wine. The winery also offers a visit with a tutored tasting of a Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva on Saturday and Sunday at 11.00 (Cost €15) and a visit-food pairing experience in the winery restaurant on Saturday and Sunday at 11.00 for groups from 5 to 15 people. Cost €20.
