Bodegas Palacio, founded in 1894, was one of the leaders of the ‘modern Rioja’ movement in the 1980s, due to the foresight of its French owner; he was among the first to use new French oak to age his wines, following the advice of the now ubiquitous Bordeaux flying winemaker, Michel Rolland. Next door to the winery is the Hotel Cosme Palacio (see ‘Places to Stay’).
