Rioja is located along one of the greatest walks of all, the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, or Pilgrims’ Route, from northern and central Europe through Spain to the city of Santiago de Compostela. The N120 from Logroño to Santo Domingo de la Calzada is parallel to the walking path, which is marked with blue and yellow signs showing a scallop shell, one of the symbols of the route. A pleasant walk of moderate difficulty is from Nájera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Unfortunately, a motorway is being built nearby, which spoils some of the charm of the hike, but in any case it is a moving experience to walk the same path as pilgrims since the Middle Ages. If you start the walk from Nájera, when you reach Santo Domingo, hire a taxi at the Parador de Turismo to take you back. The path is unpaved so be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes or boots.
