A young domaine founded by Cécile Bernhard-Reibel, only daughter of a family which used to sell its grapes to the local wine cooperative. After studying oenology, Cécile made her first vintage in 1981. The domaine now owns over 20ha in various lieux-dits (no Grands Crus) around Châtenois, and in 2002 they built an impressive cave outside the village. Their strong suit is Riesling (15 out of their 22 wines), vinified dry; their Pinot Blanc Caprice has fruit by the bucket-load. If you can still find their lightly oaked Pinot Noir 2003, jump on it. Cécile recently handed over to son Pierre, not least to free up some time for her duties outside the domaine: during 2009 she served as the first female Grand Maître of the Confrérie St-Etienne, Alsace’s august wine body whose home is in the Château de Kientzheim.
Useful information: Visits preferably by appointment. Pierre speaks excellent English (the UK is an important emerging market for them, where they’re represented by Stone Vine & Sun and Wine).
