The Mochels have been established since 1669 in Traenheim in the Couronne d’Or (‘golden crown’) some 20km west of Strasbourg. Frédéric brought the 10 hectare domaine to its present pitch and is now taking a back seat as his son Guillaume takes over. You can be sure of a warm welcome here and an instructive tasting of all the grape varieties, from feather-light, bone dry Sylvaner to flowery, lively, minerally Riesling (especially Cuvée Henriette, named after grandmother Mochel), discreet yet fruit-laden Pinot Gris and fruity and complex Gewurztraminer. Their Crémant (55% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Blanc, 10% each Riesling and Pinot Noir) is very fine.
Useful information: Tasting caveau open Monday - Saturday 08.00-12.00 and 13.30-18.00 preferably by appointment. English spoken.
