Jean-Daniel and Fabienne Héring run this 10ha family domaine based in the higgledy-piggledy, picturesque town of Barr. The estate includes a sizeable holding in Grand Cru Kirchberg (‘cherry hill’) which rises above the town, where they grow Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. Just above it is the prettily named Rosenegert lieu-dit, where they co-plant four different varieties (Riesling for freshness, Gewurz for the floral notes, Pinot Gris to give weight and Muscat for what Fabienne calls ‘le croquant’ – crunchiness) and vinify them together to give a fruit-filled mouthful.. Sensibly priced, interesting wines – worth a visit.
Useful information: The USA is an important export market for the Hérings so English is not a problem. They have a new tasting room especially for groups up to 50, situated below the Kirchberg vineyard.
