Italian-born Anne-Marie Schmitt has run this small estate since the untimely death of her husband in 1993 and for the past five years have been joined by her sons Julien and Bruno. An unconditional fan of bone-dry Riesling, Anne-Marie talks of the need to know your vines, to live with them, cosset them and anticipate (rather than react to) their every need. The results are seen in her subtle, expressive wines of great class and elegance – notably the Rieslings from Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergbieten. Some tasters detect hints of rhubarb amongst the gunflint and the flowers of Schmitt Rieslings – not as far-fetched as it might seem, since vines in the Bas-Rhin were often inter-planted with rhubarb, which cast its shady leaves over their roots. Every year Anne-Marie throws open the cellar doors for the annual ‘Pique Nique du Vigneron’ (see 'Events').
