Grandpère Neumeyer began making wine on this 16ha domaine in the days when the typical Bas-Rhin model was a mixture of fruit, vegetables, cereals and wine. His son concentrated on making wine alone and now grandson Gérard Neumeyer is going a step further and making a name for himself for fresh, floral, fairly priced wines. The Neumeyers’ response to the current debate about residual sugar is to add a back label indicating where the wine comes on a scale of sweetness from 1-10 – a blunt instrument since it tells you nothing about balance, but a move in the right direction. Their Edelzwicker (majority Sylvaner with a good dose of Muscat and Auxerrois) is gorgeously thirst-quenching, Gewurztraminer Les Deux M (for Molsheim and Mutzig, where the grapes come from) is beautifully fragrant and their (unoaked) Pinot Noir Quintessence full of cherry-ripe flavours with a slightly bitter finish.
