A treasure of a domaine with 13ha of vineyards dotted around the gorgeous village of Niedermorschwihr, including in Grand Cru Sommerberg and Grand Cru Brand. Albert Boxler is long gone, and the estate nowadays is run by his grandson, Jean, who studied viticulture at Montpellier University and returned to the family fold in the mid-90s when his father fell ill. Book a tasting ahead to be sure that Jean will be there. It’s worth spending some time with this shy, gentle young man, passionate about what he does and quietly proud of his beautifully ‘coherent’ (his word) wines. Great concentration and a dry finish, from Pinot Blanc B (grown in the Brand vineyard, usually reserved for Grand Cru wines) to the racy, stunningly complex Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru. The USA is a big export market and wines are sold out each year, so move fast once the wines are in bottle – generally during the summer following the previous harvest. While in Niedermorschwihr, don’t miss Christine Ferber’s famous pâtisserie and preserves shop on the main street.
