A real family affair (since 1610) in the beautiful hilltop village of Zellenberg with Jean-Philippe Becker as today’s winemaker and distiller, brother François as winegrower and sister Martine as multilingual President and General Manager with special responsibility for marketing and sales. The domaine consists of 16.5ha from Zellenberg to Hunawihr (of which 4ha are in Grand Cru vineyards). Conversion to organic began with a tentative 4ha in 1999 followed by seven more the next year and now the whole estate is fully organic – since when they haven’t looked back. Martine considers that Riesling is the wine which best expresses the full potential of their different terroirs, though Pinot Gris is their biggest seller. It’s worth making an appointment for a tasting here with Martine – she’s a powerhouse and a mine of information on the Alsace wine region.
Useful information: Tasting room open Monday – Friday 08.00-12.00 and 14.00-18.00 (17.15 in winter); weekends and public holidays open 10.00-12.00 and 14.00-18.00 from Easter – Christmas or by appointment. English (and six other languages) spoken.
