Pierre Gassmann is one of Alsace’s most disarming, uncomplicated wine growers and a tasting in his small, slightly scruffy cellar with an ancient bucket for a spittoon is an absolute delight. The domaine produces blockbusting, super-concentrated wines from a multiplicity of sites (45ha of vineyards) all around the little village of Rohrschwihr. The village has no Grands Crus, just an extraordinary variety of superb lieux-dits (named vineyard sites) with evocative names like Silberberg, Pflaenzerreben, Kapplerweg and Moenchreben. Each has distinct characteristics that are directly conferred on the wines. At the slightest sign of interest, Pierre Gassman will lead you through his list from A-Z, which includes not only the most recent vintages, but wines from the 1980s. Year in, year out, almost half the domaine’s wines are either Vendanges Tardives or Sélection de Grains Nobles, which gives you some idea of the ripeness levels regularly achieved here.
