Sylvie Spielmann studied winemaking first in Champagne and Burgundy, then in California and Australia, before returning home in 1988 to run the domaine – as had her mother before her. Today the holding is 8ha of vines around the small, picturesque village of Bergheim, cultivated organically and biodynamically since 1999 (a development she describes as part of a general personal development – “it felt right, from a philosophical and an ecological standpoint”). This approach has helped to improve the structure of the heavy clay soils of her vineyards in Grand Cru Kanzlerberg, where she grows some fine Riesling and Gewurztraminer, and Altenberg de Bergheim (Gewurztraminer alone – a gorgeous mouthful, long-lasting, long-lived). Almost half her wine is sold at the cellar door, and her annual ‘Pique-Nique du Vigneron’, jointly hosted by Sylvie and her Burgundian vigneron-partner, is one of the liveliest, see 'Local Events'
