The estate’s 21ha, distributed between eight different villages and including vines in the Grand Cru vineyards of Schlossberg, Furstentum, Steingrubler, Hengst and Pfersigberg, are managed today by brothers Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé and their wives Marie-Claire and Marie-Thérèse. The domaine has been organic for some years, and is gradually converting to biodynamic farming. “We don’t make too much of this”, claims Jacky Barthelmé. “For some clients it’s of central importance, for others it’s an add-on. In the end the only thing that matters is the wines – they have to stand on their own feet.” Yields since 1995 have been steadily lowered to around 45hl/ha, with evident results in the increased levels of concentration. All the Tradition range and some of the Vins de Terroir (i.e. wines designed for consumption within 4-5 years) are closed with screwcaps – still quite a novelty in Alsace.
