The best and most luxurious hotel in Champagne, Château les Crayères also rates as one of the most special places to stay in the world. Ask for a room overlooking Madame Pommery’s park or, for a romantic weekend, request the cottage in the park. As for the famous restaurant, now named Le Parc, Didier Elena, the avant-garde chef and protégé of Alain Ducasse has left for New York. Philippe Mille, his successor, is much more in the classic mould of the celebrated Gérard Boyer who earned the restaurant glory. For foodies on a budget, Le Jardin Brasserie in the grounds of the château, is a godsend. Under Mille's direction there's an excellent menu and a fine choice of 25 wines by the glass (from €3 to €14). Exceptional dishes might include the 'Dashi-maki' Japanese lacquered omelette and the Turbotin Vigneronne au Chardonnay. Eat alfresco during the summer months amid the magnificent trees of the park.
Useful information: Rooms: €325 - €660; Breakfast €28. Restaurant le Parc menus: €65 (lunch) or €110 - €290 (dinner). Menus available including wines. Brasserie Le Jardin: €28 (2 courses). See the website for various all-in offers including dinner at the restaurant or the Brasserie.
