Cédric Saur's family owns well-established Château Haut-Fabrègues (www.vins-de-faugeres.com) found in the heart of AC Faugères wine-lands near Cabrerolles. La Grange d'Aïn is Cédric's baby, a 12ha vineyard planted with old-vine Grenache, Carignan and Syrah, all farmed organically. He's making fairly serious reds with lots of fruit, big tannins, power and occasionally oak. Having said that, these wines are well-made, tasty, full of character and fashioned from true quality fruit and a hand-made approach; rather than being show-stopping competition wines you wouldn't actually want to drink. Names to note down include Le Penchant du Cerisier (mostly Carignan and Grenache, with two years in barriques), Le Cèdre (mostly Grenache and Carignan) and Les Mimosas (old-vine Syrah, with four whole years in barriques!). By the way, Cédric has plans to convert part of the family’s sprawling house/cellar/farm building complex into a gîte or chambres d’hôtes.
